British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
