Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular decisions from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
